At 69, Robert Francis Prevost has made history as the 267th pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV on May 8, 2025. Born in Chicago and deeply rooted in Catholic tradition, his election has already sparked political discussions, particularly in contrast to former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Pope Leo emphasized his immigrant heritage and strong Catholic upbringing, stating, “I was born in the United States… but my grandparents were all immigrants.”

Like his predecessor Pope Francis, Leo XIV is expected to advocate for migrants, the poor, and environmental issues, which diverge sharply from Trump-era policies.

This contrast became evident shortly after his election when Trump congratulated him, calling it “an honor for our country,” despite previous controversial posts about wanting to be pope.

Pope Leo has also engaged in political dialogue, notably clashing with JD Vance over the concept of love and responsibility. After Vance suggested a hierarchy of love, Pope Leo countered on social media, asserting that “Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.” This exchange highlighted his commitment to Gospel values over political rhetoric.
